If the frame is solid and square, most problems are fixable: worn balances or cords, broken locks, torn screens, or a cracked pane can be repaired for far less than a new unit.
Replacement makes more sense when the frame is rotted or warped, the glass seals keep failing (foggy double panes), or you want better insulation and noise control. On older homes, replacement also involves lead-safe work practices.
